The Atlantic tops 1 million subscribers and is profitable

The Atlantic has topped 1 million subscribers and is profitable, the company announced this week.

Overall revenue for the company is up more than 10 percent year over year while advertising booked year-to-date is also up 33 percent year over year, it said.

Subscriptions to The Atlantic have spiked by double-digit percentages in each of the past four years and risen 14 percent since last year.

The news comes just three years after the company faced a $20 million deficit and conducted widespread layoffs to its staff, The Wall Street Journal reported, noting the news organization raised subscription prices by more than 50 percent.

“Profitability is also perilous in the media industry, and we are going to continue to be highly disciplined in how we run our operations,” Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg and CEO Nicholas Thompson wrote to staff in a note on Thursday.

News of The Atlantic’s profitability comes in the face of widespread uncertainty across the media industry, with several of the nation’s largest news outlets in recent months laying off hundreds of journalists and looking to cut costs to combat with an increasingly tough digital ad market and changing news consumption habits.
