Not everyone saw the humor in this weekend’s Saturday Night Live. The long-running comedy show welcomed a surprise guest on Saturday (Feb. 3) when presidential hopeful Nikki Haley joined Studio 8H, making a cameo as herself for the evening’s cold open. While recapping her appearance on this morning’s episode of The View, most of the panel was disgusted (and we bet you can guess who wasn’t).
Before moderator Whoopi Goldberg even had a second to pose a question after playing a clip of Haley on SNL — during which she joked about her slavery gaffe — Ana Navarro cut in to proclaim, “I have issues with this.”
“She has screwed up this race and slavery question every damn time she gets asked about it, so I’m not ready for it to be answered with a 10-second soundbite, jokey thing,” she said, adding, “I also think Nikki Haley is not very funny.”
Predictably, a certain panelist did not share Navarro’s opinion. Haley apologist Alyssa Farah Griffin jumped in to defend her pick for president, much to Sunny Hostin‘s chagrin.
The co-host could be heard exclaiming, “Oh, Alyssa!” as Griffin praised Haley’s SNL bit, saying, “she’s hitting Donald Trump harder than Joe Biden is … she is the person taking it to Trump the hardest.”
Meanwhile, Sara Haines, ever the moderate, took a more neutral approach to the topic, telling the panel she wants “someone who can laugh at themselves.”
“We got Donald Trump because he couldn’t laugh at himself,” she argued, as Hostin interrupted her to say, “I don’t think slavery is a laughable topic, and I also don’t think it’s a laughable that she doesn’t understand that Texas can’t secede.”
Haines insisted, “that wasn’t the part that was laughable,” while Griffin stayed ride-or-die for Haley, claiming the politician “cleared up” her remarks this weekend (she was likely referring to the Texas incident, in which Haley reversed course after saying Texas could secede from the union).
Hostin shot back, “She did? Because she constantly has to clear herself up because she’s screwing up all the time!”
Navarro wrapped up the chat just as it was turning contentious. Looking right into the camera, she issued an invite to Haley to join The View: “If she really wants to talk about slavery and talk about her answers on racism and this not ever being a racist country and she wants earned media, she’s invited to come to The View.”
Goldberg had the final say, though, piping up to add, “Make sure it’s a Monday so you can be here when Ana’s here.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
