It doesn’t appear as if Bill Belichick will be coaching in 2024.
But his son will.
Steve Belichick has been hired as the new defensive coordinator for the University of Washington, per ESPN.
He had served under his father with the Patriots for the last 12 years, and he called defensive plays for the last five seasons, according ESPN.
Many expected Steve would just follow his father wherever the legendary coach landed this coaching cycle, but surprisingly no NFL team hired the 71-year-old.
Both Steve, a linebackers coach, and Brian Belichick, a safeties coach, reportedly received offers to stay on new coach Jerod Mayo’s staff.
Steve passed on that offer as he now will lead the defense for a Washington Huskies program that fell to Michigan in the national championship game last month.
He worked alongside new Washington coach Jedd Fisch during the 2020 season, when Fisch served as the Patriots’ quarterbacks coach.
Steve joined the Patriots in 2012 and worked with different units through his tenure.
He started his career as a coaching assistant from 2012-15, before shifting to the safeties from 2016-18. He then added secondary duties to his pre-existing safeties responsibilities in 2019.
That Patriots defense ranked first in total defense and scoring, and Stephen Gilmore became the first Patriot to win Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, according to the team.
Steve then coached the outside linebackers from 2020-21, and then the entire linebackers unit for the past two seasons.
The Patriots won three Super Bowl titles during his time, and his bio in the Patriots’ 2023 media guide praises him for helping Matthew Judon and Josh Uche tally career-high sacks totals.
Brian, the younger brother, coached the safeties for the past four season after spending the 2016-19 seasons as a scouting assistant and then a coaching assistant.
