Stephon Gilmore slams Bill Belichick portrayal in Patriots doc

Add Stephon Gilmore to the list of former Patriots who thought the “Dynasty” docuseries on Apple TV+ portrayed Bill Belichick in an unfair light.

Gilmore played defensive back for Belichick’s Patriots from 2017-20, and he wrote on X to voice his displeasure with how the legendary head coach came off in the doc.

“Just watched The Dynasty. Bill was the greatest coach I’ve ever been around. Don’t let that fool you. I’ll never forget we were a predominantly man team during the 2018 season all the way up to the Super Bowl. When we played the Rams we switched to Zone,” Gilmore wrote on Friday.

“No coach would switch what they did all season in a big game like that,” he added in another post.

Gilmore was a first-team All-Pro twice during his four years with the Patriots and won the AP Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019.

In addition to the Super Bowl victory against the Rams, he recalled a game against the Bills in which Belichick coached him to shut down the opposing team’s star receiver.

“Or Him telling me to play trail technique in buffalo because the Quarterback can’t throw against the wind when i was following a big time receiver. If you ever played corner that’s not a good feeling playing trail technique. I shut the WR down to 0 catches,” Gilmore wrote on X.

It is unclear exactly which game Gilmore was referring to here.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose production company is in the copyright of the documentary, said at NFL owners meetings last month that he was “a little disappointed that there wasn’t a more positive approach, especially for Patriot fans who have lived the experience with us.”

Former Patriots players Rodney Harrison and Devin McCourty also lashed out about the documentary.

McCourty, in particular, alleged that he was “duped” into speaking in it.

Belichick coached the Patriots for 24 years and won six Super Bowls, but his time with the franchise concluded after the team was 29-39 (including playoffs) once Tom Brady left for the Buccaneers.
