The man who shot and killed a Syracuse cop and a sheriff’s deputy over the weekend before dying from injuries suffered in the exchange of gunfire has been identified as Christopher R. Murphy, officials said.

Murphy got into an exchange of gunfire with an officer from the Syracuse Police Department and a deputy with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office outside of a house in Salina, a suburb of Syracuse, just before 9 p.m.

The officers had followed him to the residence after he refused to pull over during a traffic stop around 7 p.m. in the city’s Tipp Hill neighborhood.

Both officers and Murphy were all hit during the exchange. Murphy later died at the hospital from his injuries.
