Patrick and Brittany Mahomes opened up about their 1-year-old son Bronze’s severe allergic reaction to nuts that sent him to the emergency room last summer.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his wife detailed the “scariest moments” of their life in an Instagram video for Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) posted Tuesday.
“With Bronze, I was doing early introduction,” Brittany said, explaining that she decided to conduct allergy testing with Bronze when he was around 9 months old after learning that their 3-year-old daughter, Sterling, suffered from allergies.
“I was trying out different things with Bronze, and it was our first day with nuts, and it’s just, like, a little packet of powder that you add to his bottle,” she remembered.
“And so he took his bottle, and then within 30 or so minutes, he became very irritable, very fussy. I took his diaper off, and it was just hives and welts everywhere.”
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, 29, explained the hives eventually made their way up to Bronze’s upper body and face.
“It started the panic inside of me,” she shared of the August 2023 incident.
“That’s when we rushed to the emergency room. Just seeing his entire body covered in welts and hives and him being so uncomfortable was probably one of the scariest moments of my life.”
Patrick, also 29, echoed his wife’s sentiments, adding, “I remember how scared I was and how serious it felt, and luckily for us the doctors were able to help, and that’s when, to me, it became a serious thing that I needed to really pay attention to.”
Earlier this year, the Mahomeses partnered with AUVI-Q, an epinephrine injection, to spread awareness of food allergies.
The couple, who were high school sweethearts, tied the knot in March 2022.
They welcomed their son in November 2022 and daughter in February 2021.
