Over 700,000 North Texans Without Power After Tornadoes, Storms Rip Through State

Tornadoes and thunderstorms left over half a million customers in an area of northern Texas without power by Tuesday morning, the day after the Memorial Day weekend.

According to PowerOutageUS.com, over 700,000 customers in the counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Kaufman, Rockwell, Tarrant, and Wise were left without power.

Four tornadoes tore through North Texas on Saturday night. One struck northeast of Celina at a speed of 165 mph; one tore through Cooke County and into Denton County at 135 mph; another tornado in Denton County struck the Ray Roberts Marina, and a fourth in Collin County moved from the northwest of Celina to south of Weston.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for most of North Texas on Tuesday morning.

Seven people died in Valley View, located in Cooke County, from the storms on Saturday night. The seven deaths were reported after a tornado swept through a rural area near a mobile home park, according to Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, the Associated Press reported. Two of the victims were a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old. Three others killed in the north Texas storm were a mother and her two children, ages 15 and 9, according to NBC DFW.

The city of Valley View said locations for donations were available; United Methodist Church, 201 Church St., which needs diapers, wipes, pet food and hygiene supplies; the Community Center, 101 Lee St., which needs non-perishable food, sports drinks, large black trash bags and personal hygiene products, and the Agricultural Sciences Building, 700 S. Frontage Road, which asked for baby formula, bottles and Depends, KERA reported.

The Denton County Office of Emergency Management asked for donations to the United Way of Denton County. Celina police asked for donations to be given to Little Wooden Penguin or Grace Bridge.
