John Mulaney revealed his now-wife, Olivia Munn, aided his addiction recovery by randomly drug-testing him — a habit they still practice.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum, 42, was first linked to the actress, 44, in May 2021 following his stint in rehab — and they announced their pregnancy just a few months later.
Although they weren’t even officially “dating” at the time, Mulaney told GQ that Munn decided to take on a more active role in his recovery.
According to the comedian, the “Predator” actress staged a mini-intervention and began giving him random drug tests when she was around six months pregnant.
“It was like watching a man in a tsunami,” Munn said of the post-rehab period. “I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”
However, her efforts paid off and Mulaney has been sober since.
Munn still drug tests her husband, who she wed in July, which Mulaney said gives him a sense of “relief.”
“I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind,” he told the outlet. “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”
While things worked out in the end, Munn admitted she “barely knew” Mulaney when she found out she was pregnant with their first child.
“It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating,’” she told the outlet.
However, she said the comedian was thrilled with the news, noting that it was “the one thing that made him seem light and happy” despite going through such a difficult time.
Initially, the pair were planning to co-parent from separate coasts, with her based in Los Angeles while he lived in New York.
“It wasn’t necessarily ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that, but it was ‘I will be involved in some way,’” Munn said of their initial plan.
However, as the months went on, the pair grew closer and they ultimately decided to raise their son, Malcolm, as a couple just two months before his arrival.
Mulaney and Munn welcomed their son in November 2021 — three months before Mulaney finalized his divorce from ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler, whom he married eight years prior.
They welcomed their second child — a daughter named Méi — via surrogate in September.
