The Rangers’ loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday night didn’t just extend their Stanley Cup drought to over 30 years, it also ended another season without a championship in New York among the eight major pro teams in the area.
And according to the Associated Press, it’s now been 100 combined seasons played by the Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Nets, Yankees, Mets, Jets and Giants without any of them winning a ring.
The last time any of those teams won a title was when the Giants beat the New England Patriots in February 2012 to finish off the 2011 season.
There have been local championships in other pro leagues, like NYCFC capturing the MLS title in 2021, but none in the traditional four major leagues.
The Yankees figure to have the best chance to break the skid, as they have the best record in the American League.
They last won in 2009 and the 14-year gap since then is the team’s longest since it went 18 years from 1978 to 1996.
The Rangers last won the Stanley Cup in 1994, while the Mets (1986), Islanders (1983), Knicks (1973) and Jets (1968) have all been waiting even longer.
While they won an ABA championship in 1976, the Nets have never won an NBA title.
