Pat Mahomes Sr., father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, had an open can of Coors beer in his car and told police he “had a few beers” when he was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Saturday, according to an affidavit.
Mahomes Sr., 53, was arrested in Tyler, Texas, shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday and released on $10,000 bail the next day. An affidavit for the arrest obtained by the New York Post said that Mahomes Sr. told police that he “had a few beers while watching a game at a local bar” when he was asked why he was drinking and driving.
The former MLB pitcher had been driving slower than other cars, and authorities discovered his registration had expired in 2022, leading to him being pulled over.
“I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place,” the arresting officer wrote in his report, according to the Post.
The elder Mahomes faces up to ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine if he is convicted since this would be his third DWI conviction. He was also convicted of DWI in 2008 and 2019. In 2019, he spent 40 days in jail for the offense, which he served on weekends.
Patrick Mahomes Jr., who is playing in his fourth Super Bowl this Sunday, has said little regarding his father’s arrest, but on Monday night, he offered simply, “He’s doing good,” the Post reported.
“Don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is,” the younger Mahomes added. “It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family. That’s really all I’ll say at this point.”
Mahomes Sr. can still attend the Super Bowl on Sunday in Las Vegas since he was not barred from traveling as a condition of his bond, the Post reported.
In late January, Mahomes Sr. joked that he hoped he wouldn’t have to sit with Taylor Swift and Jason Kelce while watching the Chiefs play the Baltimore Ravens on January 28 during the AFC Championship game. When asked on the Evan & Tiki WFAN Sports Radio show if he planned to sit with Swift, who is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and Kelce’s brother, Mahomes Sr. joked, “I hope not,” according to the New York Post.
“No, I don’t think so. No, Travis normally has his own thing, and Patrick has his own deal, too,” Mahomes Sr. added, according to the outlet. “But I imagine if Taylor wants her own suite, I think she’s got enough money to get the one she wants.”
Mahomes Sr. also said on the program that he was not watching the previous game, against the Buffalo Bills, in a suite with Swift or Jason Kelce.
“I was actually two booths down,” he said, but added that he did go to their suite and “hung out with them a little bit after the game, after [the Chiefs] had won.”
“Those are some fun guys,” he said. “If you think Jason’s wild, you ought to see Travis.”
Mahomes Sr. was referring to viral footage of Jason Kelce shirtless at the game while holding a beer in the cold weather.

After securing his team’s place in the Super Bowl, Mahomes told reporters, “You don’t take it for granted.”
“You never know many you are going to get to, or if you are going to get to any. It really is special, but the job’s not done. Our job now is to … try to get that ring,” he said, according to the Post.
This is Mahomes’ fourth Super Bowl appearance, and if the Chiefs win, it will be his third win, tying him with Troy Aikman and Earl Morrall for third-most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback. He still trails Tom Brady, who has seven wins, and Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, who each have four wins.
