‘My husband upgraded his flight using my reward points and left me in economy’

A woman has blasted her husband for snatching her seat upgrade on the flight to their honeymoon, leaving her stranded in economy seats.

Hannah* is used to boarding a plane for work and has been jet-setting for several years.

She has been traveling around the world for ages, so when she booked flights for her honeymoon to Mexico, she knew she’d have no issues at all.

Her husband Jamie*, however, is quite a different story.

Husband grabs single upgraded flight ticket despite flying anxiety

“My husband isn’t a big fan of flying, though he has gotten better,” she told Reddit.

Whenever the plane takes off, Jamie grips his wife’s hands tight and closes his eyes, waiting for the turbulence to stop.

With this in mind, Hannah wanted to ensure she and her husband had a safe and relaxing flight on their way to Mexico, where they would spend their honeymoon.

“When I booked our flights I requested to use my points if an upgrade to business class became available,” she said.

However, the American woman “made it clear I only wanted this upgrade if two seats became available and then basically forgot about it.”

When the big day finally rolled around, and they were set to leave for their honeymoon, Hannah and Jamie were keen as mustard.

Hannah checked the couple in for their flights and they headed to the boarding gates.

“When we go to board the person scanning out boarding passes stops us,” she recalled.

The flight attendant had good news: their flight was about to get upgraded to business class.

However, there was a caveat to the upgrade; only Jamie would be able to redeem the fancy seats.

Hannah wasn’t pleased with this upgrade, as she requested that either both tickets get the upgrade or they’d spend the three-hour flight in economy like the rest of the passengers.

“I immediately say no; we are on our honeymoon and would like to stay together,” she explained.

Her husband, on the other hand, had another idea. “No it’s fine, I’ll go to business class!” he said excitedly, hoisting his carry-on up with a smile.

Hannah couldn’t help but look at Jamie in “shock.”

“He tells me that I fly all the time and have been in business class before, but he hasn’t,” he justified to her.  “So he deserves a chance to experience it.”

Turning around, she noticed a long line of other passengers waiting to board the plane, so she rolled her eyes and agreed to her husband’s upgrade.

(Remember, the upgrade only happened thanks to the points Hannah has accumulated thanks to her work flights.)

“To say I am p–sed off is an understatement,” she said. “He is all smiles, taking his seat.”

As Hannah was escorted to her seat, her mood sank further when she discovered she’d be sitting next to an “old woman with a baby in her lap” for the entire flight.

She had been sitting in her set for roughly 10 minutes “holding back tears” as she faced the flight to her own honeymoon without her husband by her side.

That’s when he started sending her texts asking for assistance with his flying anxiety.

“I ignore the texts and stop looking at my phone,” she said.

But an hour into the flight Jamie sulked his way back to economy with a plate of food in his hands. “[Jamie] offers me half of his business class breakfast and asks me why I was ignoring him,” she said.

He was going through some tough anxiety regarding the flight and he “needed me to tell him it’d be okay.”

“He should have thought about that before leaving me alone before our honeymoon even really began,” she spat back, making him angry.

“He … tells me that this may be the only time he gets to fly business class and he was giving me half his breakfast to make up for it, so I could at least be supportive of his genuine fear,” she said.

Rolling her eyes once again, she thanked him for the breakfast and he made his way back to his seat.

“He was using his need for you as a weapon”

The entire Reddit community had a feeling her husband knew he “f–ked up” with this move and stuck by Hannah as she endured the flight to her honeymoon alone.

After all, if his flying anxiety was so bad, he should have considered sitting next to his wife for support.

“[Jamie] jumped at the chance to sit – alone – in biz class and I guess it didn’t occur to him how evidently very reliant he is on you during flying,” someone said.

“It’s like he was using his need for you as a weapon, to make you feel obligated to forgive him for making a pretty shitty choice given that it was your honeymoon.”

“If the guy really had anxiety about flying, he would have thought about it,” another agreed.

But some were a little more sympathetic towards Jamie and encouraged Hannah to let him off the hook this once.

“He had a selfish moment where he had to weigh his wants against yours and chose his own,” read a comment.

“That happens in relationships all the time. We are not perfect and we do not always consider all of the external factors and we do not always put our partners first. That’s normal.”
