Yellowstone star Luke Grimes finally addressed Kevin Costner‘s shocking decision to exit the series early, leaving the series finale in flux.
Costner, who plays Grimes’ father on-screen, reportedly wanted to spend less time filming the show, prompting Paramount to end Yellowstone early. According to Grimes, Costner had become “busy” pursuing other “passion projects,” such as his upcoming Western Horizon: An American Saga.
“Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show was going to unfold,” he recently told The Independent.
“At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man,” he added. “You gotta do what you love.”
Costner has expressed interest in returning for the rest of Yellowstone Season 5, though it’s unclear what capacity that would be in. The actor recently said he’d “like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to.”
“I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five,” he recently said. “So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
A new report from Puck also claims that Season 5 Part 2 is “already written,” with filming slated to begin “in a few weeks.” The report also mentioned that Costner is “telling people he’s planning to return for at least a cameo and possibly more,” though “no discussions” have occurred just yet.
However, Yellowstone star Josh Lucas was unable to shed any light on what fans should expect from the new episodes. During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the actor said that series creator and writer Taylor Sheridan has kept all of those details quiet.
“Taylor is a closed book,” Lucas said. “If there is a closed book, it’s that man. He’s a one-man band. He does everything himself. Like [he’s a] very unusual guy.”
He continued, “Most shows have 10 writers, right? Or more. And Taylor is doing all of it himself. And he keeps it very close to the chest so none of us know.”
According to Lucas, not a “single person” knows how the series will end.
For now, Paramount has already planned a sequel that is rumored to star Matthew McConaughey.
Yellowstone is now streaming on Peacock Premium.
