Emily in Paris star Lucas Bravo made headlines for criticizing his character, Chef Gabriel, and the show’s trajectory in an interview with IndieWire last month. He may have made waves with his cast mates, too.
An inside source told Us Weekly that “the show will go on with or without Lucas,” cheekily adding that “the show is Emily in Paris — not Gabriel in Paris.”
“Everyone is so upset about the remarks he made,” the source claimed. “There is going to be a lot of tension.”
Created by Darren Star, the Netflix rom-com series follows Chicago native Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) as she takes her marketing talents to Paris. The show also stars Ashley Park, Lucien Laviscount and Camille Razat.
Bravo had told IndieWire that his role was “being slowly turned into guacamole,” claiming that “the ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of [him] in Season 1 and [they] grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take.”
“I’ve never been so far away from him,” he added.
Bravo also noted that he had attempted to share his concerns, though he said “there is only so much [he] can do in the limits of a script.” While he claimed he “tried for seasons to bring nuances but [they] don’t have much liberty on set,” he argued they “cannot change a word or an emotion.”
“They know what they want and we just have to comply,” he continued.
Yet, Bravo assured the outlet that Emily in Paris “started everything” for him and that he “love[s] the show and the people in it.”
“With saying that, I feel like I am not being nice or grateful, but when you love something you want it to be…you want the best version of it,” he acknowledged. “I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction by character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over.”
The series was renewed for Season 5 back in September, just days after the release of Season 4, Part 2. The last installment wrapped with Emily pursuing her relationship with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) in Rome after giving it a shot with Gabriel throughout the season. Prior to the premiere of Season 4, Part 1, Bravo told DECIDER that “part of the Gabriel in [him] was relieved, because [it had] been such a long time since [they] had such intimate moments —since Season 1.”
“It was so good to get back to that playfulness and to just go with confidence towards the woman you love, and to just try to reignite that flame. So I loved it,” he added.
Emily in Paris Seasons 1-4 are now streaming on Netflix.
