Lawmakers in the House and Senate are set to elect their leaders on Wednesday after Republicans scored a trifecta — winning the House, Senate and White House — in last week’s election.
While both parties will select their leadership teams, all eyes are on Republicans in both chambers.
In the Senate, Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) are competing to be the next Senate majority leader, replacing the outgoing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) after a record tenure.
In the House, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) appears set to retain the top job on the Republican side but is facing a protest from hardline conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus.
President-elect Trump is also expected to make an appearance at Wednesday’s House GOP meeting.
