Jill Biden Slams Special Counsel in Fundraising Email Flurry

First lady Jill Biden, in a fundraising email she has sent out three times since Saturday, condemned Special Counsel Robert Hur for what she called “inaccurate and personal political attacks” on her husband President Joe Biden.

“Rather than just saying the case was closed, as they have for others,” Jill Biden wrote in the emails, “the Special Counsel claimed that Joe ‘couldn’t remember the year his son died.’ Believe me, like anyone who has lost a child, Beau and his death never leave him.”

Last week’s special counsel report has put the president under renewed scrutiny over his mental fitness. The report called Biden an “elderly man with a poor memory,” noting that during two interviews with federal investigators, the 81-year-old president “did not remember when he was vice president” or “remember, within several years, when his son Beau died.”

The first lady, however, suggested in the flurry of emails that the special counsel was “try[ing] to use our son’s death to score political points.” She dismissed concerns about her husband’s age and described him as “the most resilient person I’ve ever known.”

“Joe is 81, that’s true, but he’s 81 doing more in an hour than most people do in a day,” Jill Biden said. “Joe has wisdom, empathy, and vision. He has delivered on so many of his promises as President precisely because he’s learned a lot in those 81 years. His age, with his experience and expertise, is an incredible asset and he proves it every day.”

Jill Biden went on to list her husband’s accomplishments as president. “[Joe Biden] brought our country back from COVID. He brought our economy back from the brink. He created 14 million jobs. Gas prices are down. Inflation is down. Energy costs are down. He got bipartisan legislation passed—even in the midst of this hyper-partisan environment. The media may not give him credit, but I’m thankful you realize all he’s done for this country,” she said.

The emails also described Jill Biden as “Beau’s mother,” even though Beau was born to Neilia Biden, the president’s first wife, who died in a car accident in 1972. Joe Biden remarried with Jill in 1977, after which the two raised Joe’s young sons Beau and Hunter.

The email flurry came amid the president’s lackluster performance in the polls. According to an ABC News/Ipsos poll released over the weekend, 86 percent of Americans think Biden is too old to serve as president again.
