I’m a dietician — these teas can help you lose weight

A dietician is spilling the tea on how certain brews can help you lose weight.

Lauren Manaker, an award-winning registered dietitian, author, speaker, and entrepreneur wrote an article for Health sharing her favorite teas to support you on your weight loss journey.

Green tea

Pesky weight, prepare to meet your Match-a.

Green tea has both antioxidants and caffeine, which can both aid in weight loss, Manaker explained.

Green tea has antioxidants called catechizes which support the metabolism, help the body burn fat and reduce fat in the abdominal region.

Caffeine can also assist in weight loss because it speeds up the rate at which the body burns calories. Caffeine also helps the body use fat as an energy source, she said.

Black tea

Perhaps the best breakfast is one with a cup of English breakfast.

Black tea goes through a fermentation process which increases the levels of flavonoids in the tea. These flavonoids, called thearubigins and theaflavins, are thought to aid metabolism and contribute to weight loss.

The antioxidants in black tea, called polyphenols are also thought to help weight loss along with the caffeine in the tea.

Oolong tea

Say oolong and farewell to those extra pounds.

Oolong tea has several polyphonic compounds that may aid weight loss.

“These bioactive components are believed to enhance fat metabolism, increasing the body’s ability to burn fat more efficiently,” Manaker wrote.

She referenced a study published in the journal Nutrients which found that people who drank oolong tea for two weeks had increased fat oxidation, which can aid in weight loss.

Researchers have also observed that oolong tea may lower insulin levels and blood sugar.

This tea may give you some encourage-mint on your weight loss journey.

Peppermint tea can improve digestion thanks to its menthol which relaxes the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. Menthol can improve digestion and aid bloating.

Manaker said research suggests that the smell of peppermint also acts as an appetite suppressant which can lead to weight loss.

Ginger tea

Ginger tea may add to your spice of life if you’re trying to lose weight.

Ginger tea has gingerol in it which acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, which in turn, enhances the body’s ability to burn calories.

A study published in the journal Metabolism in 2012 found that people who drank ginger tea were less hungry and ate less.

Hibiscus tea

If you’re feeling low about your weight, you may want to add hibiscus to your diet.

Hibiscus tea is a flavorful and calorie-free alternative to other beverages that may contribute to weight loss.

Manaker added that hibiscus’ primary compounds, called anthocyanins, could limit the body’s absorption of carbohydrates. Hibiscus extract also has anti-obesity effects and may limit fat buildup in the body, she added.
