This is red-iculous.
Introducing the Rubyglow pineapple: an appealingly pinkish-red hybrid fruit developed by Fresh Del Monte with a staggering $400 price tag.
“Named for the ruby and its rich red color, scarce supply and association with luxury, this exceptional fruit offers a special experience to those who appreciate uniqueness,” the Fresh Del Monte website explains.
The hybrid fruit has a red outer skin and a classic sweet yellow interior.
The pineapple is individually packaged and sold without its spiky crown, which is replaced by its beautiful box that unfolds almost like origami.
Only a few thousand will be produced this year and next as each fruit is grown from a limited seed supply and takes about two years to grow.
The sticky and sweet treat is being heralded as an “ultra-premium luxury ‘designer’ fruit that appeals to high-end consumers,” according to the announcement.
The “designer” fruit was created in Costa Rica after 15 years of research using traditional crossbreeding techniques to combine a conventional pineapple with a dark red-purple, or morada, variety found predominantly in Venezuela and Colombia.
It now has a registered plant patent in the United States.
The rare exotic fruit launched in the US this week after only being available via a waitlist in China since January.
It comes as the latest addition to Fresh Del Monte’s wide variety of prickly fruits that range from the Mini Honeyglow “personal-size” pineapple to the Pinkglow — the world’s only pink pineapple.
“With its distinctive bright red shell and extra sweet taste, Rubyglow is the ultimate exotic fruit – an exclusive, limited-availability pineapple that is sure to impress as a unique gift or served as a creative way to entertain guests,” Melissa Mackay, Fresh Del Monte’s Vice President of Marketing, North America said in a statement.
