‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Script Is Written Says Christopher McDonald

A sequel to Adam Sandler‘s famed 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore is apparently in the works, at least according to actor Christopher McDonald.

McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original film, said during an interview on Friday’s episode of Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan radio show, that he has seen a script for Happy Gilmore 2.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago… And he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2,’” said McDonald before joking that the hosts may want to “cut that out” of the show.

“I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’,” he added. “So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

McDonald later added that he was “very, very pleased” with the script. Sandler has not yet revealed any details on the project.

Sandler co-wrote Happy Gilmore under his Happy Madison banner. The popular comedy follows a rowdy amateur hockey player who discovers he’s an exceptional golfer when using his slapshot-style swing.

In the film, he joins a golf tournament in an attempt to win some money to help save his grandmother’s house, which the bank is foreclosing on. Due to his unconventional style, he draws negative attention from golf pro Shooter McGavin (McDonald).

The film also stars Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Kevin Nealon, and Carl Weathers (who died last month at age 76). Bob Barker, who died in August of last year at age 99, also had a famous cameo where he fought Sandler on the course.

Happy Gilmore joins a collection of comedy classics that Sandler released throughout the ’90s, including Billy Madison, Big Daddy, and The Waterboy.
