The San Francisco Giants appeared to be sending a message to their Southern California rivals when they released their promotional calendar on Thursday and just so happened to schedule Disneyland Day on June 30 when they host the Dodgers.
And what else would you give away on Disneyland Day? Well, Mickey Mouse ears hats of course.
Whether it’s purely a coincidence or a level of trolling that earned praise across the internet on Thursday may be up for some debate, but there’s no denying the possible connection.
The Dodgers won the 2020 World Series during the COVID-shortened season that saw teams play just 60 games – a little more than a third of a normal MLB schedule – and sports fans have taken to questioning the validity of championships won during the pandemic.
The Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games in 2020 to capture the title, but it came during a season in which there were no fans in the stands and Giants supporters have not been shy about classifying it a “Mickey Mouse” title.
And as Dodgers Nation pointed out as well, Disneyland in California is based in Anaheim California and if the promotion was meant to have some correspondence with the opposing team, doing it against the Angels would have made more sense.
The rivalry between the Giants and Dodgers dates back to the time when the two ball clubs called the Polo Grounds and Brooklyn home, respectively.
It continued after both teams relocated to California.
The Dodgers have had plenty of regular-season success over the past few years, but they’ve only gotten one title to show for it.
A massive offseason once again has the Dodgers in the conversation for a possible title contender.
They made three big additions with Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow all joining the roster for 2024.
