Francisco Alvarez is back from the IL in time for Tuesday’s series opener against the Marlins.
The Mets catcher has been out since April 19 after tearing a ligament in his left thumb.
With the return of Alvarez, the Mets also made their decision with their backup catcher situation, with Luis Torrens sticking around and Tomas Nido designated for assignment.
Torrens was acquired from the Yankees last month as a replacement for Omar Narvaez, who was released after a disappointing — and expensive — stint in Queens.
Torrens has impressed both behind the plate and offensively since his arrival.
And The Post’s Mike Puma reported that Nido has enough service time to refuse being sent to Triple-A Syracuse.
