Megan Rapinoe had a message for her haters who celebrated her career-ending Achilles injury last November.
There’s a “special place in hell” for you.
Rapinoe was speaking on “Pablo Torre Finds Out” on Tuesday when she made the comments about those who might’ve taken joy in the injury that occurred on Nov. 11 during the NWSL championship game in San Diego.
“It is sad, like I wish that didn’t happen. I’m just thinking about my teammates coming over, of course it’s sad. … it’s kinda just life,” Rapinoe said. “We want these perfect stories and I’m a controversial figure, and having people low-key celebrate it — but then also be so disingenuous about it, that that part is kinda funny too. I’m like, wow you guys are in a special place in hell that you’re celebrating this.”
Rapinoe is one of the greatest women’s soccer players in the sport has seen, but her strong opinions on topics such as racial injustice and former President Donald Trump haven’t sat well with a certain segment of Americans.
But it was a joke that she made after the game in November that seemingly offended Christians.
The American soccer star joked that her injury is proof that God doesn’t exist, which apparently didn’t sit well with some.
“They also missed the whole joke,” she said on Tuesday. “Don’t act like you’re surprised by me making this joke about what happened, or finding a dig. I’m like, yeah, I’m gonna find a funny dig. Who’s it at? God, myself, religion, the world? I don’t know.”
Rapinoe had a long list of accomplishments during her time with the U.S. Women’s National Team, but in her final Women’s World Cup, she missed a massive penalty kick against Sweden in the round of 16.
She said that does not diminish what she did in her storied international career.
“I don’t think it takes anything away from my career,” she said. “I don’t think missing that penalty takes anything away from my career — it’s actually all part of it. And if you don’t try you’re never gonna do anything.”
