‘Fallout’ Star Sarita Choudhury “Loves” The Fan Theories That Moldaver and Rose Were Lovers: “There’s Such Closeness”

Sarita Choudhury addressed fan theories about whether her Fallout character Lee Moldaver had a romantic relationship with Rose MacLean, played by Elle Vertes in flashbacks seen in the final episode of the first season.

The post-apocalyptic video game adaptation premiered to great success on Prime Video, and quickly scored a second season renewal. Of course, such high viewership and the popularity of the source material means that there’s an active fanbase theorizing about every little detail of the series — including the characters’ love lives.

The rebellious character Moldaver is the subject of several fan theories with many viewers speculating over whether she had a romantic relationship with Rose.

Decider had the opportunity to chat with Choudhury following the release of the series — but before yesterday’s Season 2 renewal news — and we asked her about the relationship between the two characters.

“I have a backstory and I can’t say much,” Choudhury says about Moldaver. “But I can say I love that [fans] are picking up on all of this and adding — or whatever — to it. There is such closeness. Who knows, if there’s a Season 2, you will find out.”

In the final episode of the season, Lucy (Ella Purnell) finds Moldaver, who has kidnapped her father Hank (Kyle MacLachlan). The leader reveals to the young woman that her father had attacked her mother Rose after she left the Vault with their children after being lied to about the state of the world.

“She found this wonderful city that was everything the Vaults said it would be, but her husband came after her and when she decided not to return home, he took the children and he burned that city to the ground,” Moldaver tells Lucy.

The leader then introduces Rose, who now takes the form of a feral ghoul, meaning that her radiation exposure was not entirely lethal. Rose is shot to death by Lucy in mercy. Moldaver is later shot when the Brotherhood of Steel invades her camp. The leader chooses to die alongside Rose’s decaying body while holding her hand.

Much like Moldaver’s affect on the fans, the character left Choudhury with lingering questions. “All the fans’ questions were my questions,” the actress told Decider.

Choudhury praised the writers as “quirky” and intelligent,” and acknowledged that there was a lot they couldn’t reveal about her character. She compared them to seeking answers from a priest: “They’re like, ‘My child, I understand you, but I also can’t give you everything.’”

The actress continued, “That’s how I felt with them. But then they would always give me enough to act and not be in the dark. They couldn’t tell me everything. It was hard but I love these writers.”

As Choudhury teased, with Fallout returning for a second season, more of Moldaver’s backstory may come to light. For what it’s worth, we’d go to bat for a couple of romantic flashbacks between Moldaver and Rose — and it seems that Choudhury would as well.

Fallout is streaming on Prime Video.
