And the Oscar goes to … Emily.
Emma Stone prefers to go by her given name, Emily, when possible, she revealed in a new interview. Although her stage name is “Emma” — those she works behind the scenes with stick to the name that’s on her birth certificate.
The Oscar winner, 35, decided to change her name because there was already another actress who was a member of the SAG-AFTRA with it.
“People that I work with [call me Emily] when I get to know them,” she told The Hollywood Reporter while recently promoting “The Curse” with co-star Nathan Fielder.
“Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’ Nathan calls me Em, which is easier.”
The “Poor Things” actress also won’t correct a fan if they call her by her real name.
“No. That would be so nice,” she replied. “I would like to be Emily.”
Stone previously joked about her name while gushing over her No. 1 favorite band — the Spice Girls — in November 2018. Thanks to Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), she did lean into being called “Emma” even back then.
“Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am,” she said during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” at the time.
“It wasn’t necessarily because of her but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes I did,” she went on. “And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes it was.”
Other stars who don’t go by their real names include Olivia Wilde (Olivia Cockburn), Blake Lively (Blake Brown), Reese Witherspoon (Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon), Miley Cyrus (Destiny Hope Cyrus), Jamie Foxx (Eric Marlon Bishop), Vin Diesel (Mark Sinclair) and Demi Moore (Demi Gene Guynes).
