Before I go any further it appears WordPress has changed things around.on the blogs. I’m not sure I like this.
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any any amazement.
7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
Yesterday we had a wonderful discussion of these verses. We discussed how the word submission and reverence tends to ruffle feathers. There’s this mistaken idea that if we as Christian wives submit to our husbands we are door mats. I’ve heard many a woman say, “I will never submit” to any man, yet they’re the same ones who will submit to their male boss.🤷
One of the questions from the lesson book is” What is reverence and what attitude does it include?” I decided to look up the definition in Webster’s 1828 dictionary and this is what it says, noun- fear mingled with respect and esteem. Verb-to regard with fear and affection.
But ladies this fear is being not being afraid but respect . One thing I want to make clear is we are to always reverence God first then our husbands. Verse one talks about our godly behavior winning over unbelieving husbands. Sadly not all unbelieving husbands will turn their will to God. Those of us with godly husbands need to lift up our sisters in prayer for their marriage.
We also talked about verse three about our outward appearance vs our inward attitude. God doesn’t want us to focus too much on expensive clothing, hairdos, etc. This of course doesn’t mean we should look like slobs around our husbands. Our inner beauty should come.from having a godly attitude by displaying the fruits of the Spirit ( See Galatians 5:22-23).
This post is getting long. How do you all apply I Peter 3:1-7 to your own lives? I’d love to read your ideas!
Edit-In my haste to get out post and get out the door to get to church I didn’t check my post carefully . I meant to say, fear is NOT being afraid. Sorry about that.
