At the New York Post, we pride ourselves on working around the clock to test the best products, scout the best deals and bring to life serviceable, shopping-based content to guide you in spending your time and money wisely.
That’s why Amazon Prime Day is an industry-known case study of sorts in the world of online retail. It’s the two-day shopping event that occurs once (or twice, or even three times, perhaps?) annually that has us all clicking onto Amazon, searching for whatever we need — and then some — and reaping the benefits of free and fast two-day shipping, slashed-down prices and a satisfied experience.
That’s if you have an Amazon Prime membership, of course. Sign up for your free trial to unlock access to future retailer promotions, events and special offers, including Prime Video.
Speaking of the future, it seems like we’re always asking the question right along with you: when’s the next Amazon Prime Day? We would certainly be producing 100+ deals-centric roundups for you if the 2024 event has officially landed but, in the meantime, we’re here to share with you what we know so far.
With the retailer’s first-ever Big Spring Sale (March 20-25) behind us, we know that Amazon’s typical summertime Prime Day will be here before you know it. The difference? Prime Day will likely be for Prime-only members. We anticipate it will also be two days’ worth of deals, not six days.
Post Wanted has a dedicated team of seasoned reporters, editors, product experts and deal-hunters who have covered Amazon Prime Day and all of its glory for years. While dates and deals tend to slightly differ with each progressive event, there are a few top-level trends and practices we’ve picked up on. And, it’s all tied together below, in a neat little bow.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is the retailer’s very own shopping event that typically spans two days. Traditionally, it occurred once a year in either June or July but now, we’re beginning to see Amazon add “surprise” dates throughout the year. In 2024, we anticipate at least two Prime Day events, with a possible third encroaching soon.
As the event’s name suggests, this is the *prime time* to score discounts on some of your favorite items that have been escorted to the “save for later” section in your shopping cart. Yes, we know you have one of those.
From reporting on Amazon Prime Day throughout the years, we can tell you for certain that it’s the ideal period to pick up a new mattress, restock some new or upgraded kitchen items and comb through the massive catalog of Amazon best-sellers.
“According to our data, 51% of consumers are motivated to buy online by items being on sale, so Prime Day really taps into what they want,” Chris Beer, data journalist at audience insights company GWI, exclusively told the New York Post. “As the sales run for a limited time, it creates a sense of urgency and scarcity that makes consumers feel like they’re missing out if they don’t get involved. It also occupies a gap in the retail calendar, giving them an excuse to spend [what] wasn’t always there.”
When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?
The official dates of Amazon Prime Day 2024 haven’t yet been confirmed, though we anticipate there being a two-day event during the second week of July. Prime Day tends to run from Tuesday to Wednesday, so the New York Post predicts this year’s event to take place in this consistent manner, with our guesstimate at the second week of July.
Do you need an Amazon Prime membership to shop Prime Day deals?

How long does Prime Day last?
The logistics and runtimes of Amazon Prime Day are always subject to change, though you can expect the event to be at least two days long. Throughout this time, Amazon hosts minute-by-minute Lightning Deals which tend to yield a higher percentage off with a shorter time frame to purchase them.
What should I buy on Prime Day?
If you’re a frequent Amazon shopper, you likely know that your shopping cart may look different from your bestie’s wishlist. In short, Amazon purchases are largely influenced by what you need to buy or are shopping for.
From our experience reporting on Prime Day, we can assure you it’s the time to score the longtime-trending LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask that’s usually 20% off. You can also expect electric toothbrushes and 23andMe kits to host deep discounts. Oh, and how can we forget the Crest 3D Whitestrips? They’ve been a top-purchased item among New York Post readers and are usually 50% off for a limited time.
Products that are retailed and directly sold on the platform by Amazon, especially Amazon-branded products, “can be expected to be sold at aggressively low prices, which will be a great boon for consumers and will probably turn out to be the most popular items to shop for during Prime Day,” Yoni Mazor, co-founder and chief growth officer of GETIDA, a firm that audits and reconciles tens of billions of transactions for Amazon sellers worldwide, told The Post.
These brands are well-recognized (and much-adored) such as Amazon Kindle tablets, Amazon Ring devices, Amazon Alexa gadgets and more.

What stores offer competing Prime day sales?
The duration of Amazon Prime Day lends itself to other brands, retailers and stores offering competing deals. In previous years, we’ve seen just-as-good sales from Best Buy, Madewell, Target, Walmart and Wayfair.
