An eagle-eyed customer has pointed out an issue she encountered when she tried to initiate a split payment while paying for her groceries.
Amy was shopping at Australian grocery store Coles when her total came to $126.98 [$83.86 USD], so she decided to pay $100 [$70 USD] in cash and the rest on her card. She assumed there would be no rounding up because of this and she wouldn’t have to pay the extra two cents.
“You can pay the exact amount when you pay on your card but if I was paying cash I’d have to give her $127 [$84.50 USD],” Amy told her followers.
Amy handed over the cash but when she looked at the credit card machine she realized there was still a sum of $27 [$17.97] left. She questioned the cashier and they said it was correct due to rounding up.
“I’ve never really paid attention before but does that always happen? Are we rounding on Eftpos
transactions now,” she asked.
“I know it’s two cents but all of the two cents add up over time.”
Social media users were torn with some mocking Amy for stressing over the two cents while others said “That’s wrong. Every cent counts it should have been $26.98 [$17.96 USD].”
Another said: “I feel this is new. Good pick up.”
Amy then took it upon herself to call up the Coles customer service line to address the issue and was quickly put at ease when she discovered that this was an error.
The woman on the phone said the staff member should have put the Eftpos
payment through first followed by the cash payment.
“I feel a little better that this isn’t a normal thing and just hope that others are now aware and confident enough to challenge Eftpos rounding also,” Amy said.
News.com.au understands that Coles does not round up on Eftpos
transactions and in this particular instance, it looks as though the staff member manually entered the $27 rather than $26.98.
It appears this is an isolated incident.
