Country music icon Toby Keith died Monday after a battle with stomach cancer, his team announced on social media. He was 62.
“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family,” the statement read.
“He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”
The “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” crooner first announced his diagnosis in June 2022 after already having gone through extensive treatment.
“I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good,” he shared at the time.
“I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”
Just six months later, Keith called his battle against the disease “pretty debilitating” but was trying to get back into “fighting shape.”
He appeared to have turned a corner, as he shared in June 2023 that he was “feeling pretty good”; however, he still remained concerned about his prognosis.
“Basically, everything is in a real positive trend,” he told The Oklahoman, “[but] you never know with cancer, so you have to prepare.”
