Don’t think the political games are done just because Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg and Judge Juan Merchan have engineered a kangeroo-court conviction of President Donald Trump: Sentencing is still ahead.
Conveniently (for anti-Trumpers), Merchan set that hearing for July 11, just four days before the Republican convention opens.
That gives him a perfect time to look at the polls and see if President Biden needs yet more help.
If Trump’s current narrow lead increases these next six weeks, bet on Merchan to demand hard time.
Yes, legal experts say it’s beyond rare for a judge to send a first offender, convicted of a non-violent crime, to prison.
But this judge has proven himself more than willing to burst far past the boundaries of decency where Trump is concerned.
It’s no secret that the whole dog-and-pony show was politically driven.
Not only did Bragg, the prosecutor who usually hates prosecuting, have to twist the case into pretzels in order to bring felony charges, he wouldn’t have brought charges at all had his target’s last name not been “Trump.”
Meanwhile, Merchan, who donated to Biden’s campaign in 2020, didn’t bother to hide his bias throughout the trial: He let the prosecution run wild, while kneecapping the defense, excluded testimony that would’ve eviscerated the prosecution’s case, slapped the ex-prez with a gag order and ripped into Trump’s lawyers and even a defense witness for next to nothing.
Why would he refrain from an unprecedented punishment, especially if the verdict alone isn’t slowing Trump’s momentum?
The Donald is now leading Biden in swing states and narrowing the gap in even deep-blue states like New York.
If he’s polling even better come July 11, Merchan’s fellow Democratic hacks will be in full panic, demanding he “save the country” . . . from democracy.
The four criminal cases brought against Trump have one thing in common: They’re meant to drag him into the mud, keep him off the campaign trial and bolster our disaster of a president.
Heck, keeping Biden in office is vital to keeping endless “free money” coming from Washington.
Ordering Trump behind bars is no more outrageous than all the other violations of norms in this case.
And Democrats, especially in New York, have already proved they care about nothing more than keeping power.
