In a move that will affect the rest of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Commanders selected quarterback Jayden Daniels with the No 2 pick.
The Commanders marked the first true X-factor in the 2024 NFL Draft since the Bears had all but announced quarterback Caleb Williams would be the first pick.
Washington reportedly made it known it would not be entertaining offers for the second pick, its chance to draft the cornerstone quarterback it has lacked for decades.
That left Washington to decide among Drake Maye, Daniels and J.J. McCarthy, although most projected it truly as a two-quarterback debate between Maye and Daniels.

While Maye had been favored at times to be Washington’s selection, the betting markets shifted leading into the draft and installing Daniels as the favorite.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner from LSU emerged as the favorite despite reports stating he did not appreciate being hosted by Washington while other prospects visited too.
The Commanders did not let those reports deter them and they now hope he can lead forward a new era for the franchise alongside new coach Dan Quinn.
Daniels, a dual-threat quarterback, tossed 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions last season, and added 1,134 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.
He has skills reminiscent of Robert Griffin III, Washington’s last No. 2 pick in the 2012 Draft.
Washington’s newest player joins an offense that has the pieces to be successful, even if the team may be a little bit away from contending.
Washington finished 4-13 and in last place in the NFC East last season.
The Commanders added pass-catching back Austin Ekeler this offseason to complement Brian Robinson, and they have a true No. 1 receiver in Terry McLaurin alongside former first-rounder Jahan Doston.
New offensive coordinator and former Cardinals head coach Kilff Kingsbury will oversee the offense.
