Bill Belichick jokingly set the record straight over who was responsible for the Patriots’ dynasty.
The former New England head coach made a surprise appearance during Sunday’s “Roast of Tom Brady” on Netflix, being brought out by Hollywood A-lister Will Ferrell – in character as Ron Burgundy.
Belichick spent more than 10 minutes on stage and ended his set by giving his take on the debate as to who was the reason for the Patriots’ seven Super Bowl titles.
“For all of you out there that think about who’s responsible for the Patriots’ success during the time that Tom and I were there,” Belichick said. “Was it Brady? Was it me? Was it Brady? Was it me? In reality, the truth of the matter is, it was both of us because of me.”
That wasn’t the only zinger Belichick got in at Brady’s expense.
Earlier, the former NFL coach referenced the struggles of Birmingham City, the English soccer club that Brady is part owner of and which was relegated to the third tier of England’s soccer pyramid.
“They suck,” Belichick said about them. “Not so easy running a team is it Tom?”
Belichick then made mention of how he and Brady would butt heads at times while taking a jab at Alex Guerrero — the trainer behind Brady’s TB12 method.
“In a way that was true, but not really. It was hard to butt heads with Tom because he was so far up Alex Guerrero’s ass,” he said.
Belichick also didn’t shy away from ribbing his negative portrayal in the 10-part “The Dynasty: New England Patriots” docuseries on Apple TV+.
“It’s an honor to be at the roast of Tom Brady on Netflix tonight. It’s not to be confused with the 10-part Bill Belichick roast during the Apple TV documentary,” said Belichick.
He even had some fun at tight end Rob Gronkowski’s expense, taking aim at his work on TV.
“Gronk, I’ve been watching on Fox NFL Sunday and I’m begging you, please stop doing your job,” Belichick said. “Do another job. Do somebody else’s job.”
Aside from Brady, Belichick was a frequent target for the roasters on Sunday night, with Ferrell taking shots at Belichick just before he brought him on stage.
At one point Ferrell said that it was clear Brady was the reason for the Dynasty.
“Remember that period when people thought it was you, well it wasn’t. It was Tom,” Ferrell joked.
