Biden to make unscheduled trip to Wilmington after son Hunter’s conviction

President Biden will travel to Wilmington, Del. on Tuesday on an unscheduled trip back home after his son Hunter Biden was convicted on felony gun charges earlier in the day.

The previously scheduled White House press briefing is also no longer anticipated to occur Tuesday.

The president added to his schedule a trip to his Delaware home a couple of hours after the verdict. He will leave for Joint Base Andrews to depart on Air Force One to Wilmington around 3 p.m., directly after a previously scheduled speech at a gun safety in Washington.

Biden is expected to arrive in Wilmington just before 4 p.m. He previously was scheduled to return to the White House and is scheduled to depart early Wednesday morning for Italy to attend the G-7 summit for the week.

Hunter Biden was convicted on three felony gun charges after roughly three hours of deliberation, marking the first criminal conviction of a sitting president’s child.   The charges involve Hunter Biden lying on a form about being addicted to drugs while obtaining a firearm in 2018.

Biden’s speech at the Washington Hilton is at Everytown’s Gun Sense University, where he is set to address gun violence prevention and his efforts to curb gun purchases and use.

Earlier on Tuesday, the president said he would accept the outcome of his son’s conviction. He also reiterated his support for his son and appealed to other families whose loved ones have struggled with addiction as Hunter Biden’s drug use was aired out in great detail during the trial.

While the president didn’t attend any of the trial, first lady Jill Biden was present at most of their son’s trial. She is currently in Wilmington and was at the courthouse moments after the verdict on Tuesday.
