Biden issues safety reminder ahead of solar eclipse: ‘Don’t be silly, folks’

President Biden is issuing a sunny safety reminder – and seemingly throwing some shade at former President Trump – ahead of the solar eclipse.

“An eclipse is worth marveling at,” the White House wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

“But don’t be silly, folks – play it safe and wear protective eyewear,” Biden said, alongside a short clip of the commander in chief sporting eclipse glasses while looking up into the sky outside the White House.

Experts warn that looking directly at the celestial event as the moon passes over the sun on Monday afternoon can cause permanent damage to the eyes, recommending that viewers sport solar viewing glasses.

The Biden White House advice could be seen as a dig at Trump, who was famously photographed in 2017 watching a solar eclipse without the protective glasses. As he viewed the rare event from the Blue Room Balcony at the White House with wife Melania and son Barron, Trump could be seen momentarily removing his glasses and looking up at the sun while pointing to the sky.

Biden is poised to be in Wisconsin on Monday to talk about new student debt relief and is not expected to be in the path of totality for the solar eclipse.
