President Biden will deliver a speech on reproductive rights while campaigning in Tampa, Fla., Tuesday afternoon. It’s his first visit to Florida since its state Supreme Court cleared the way for a policy effectively banning most abortions beginning May 1.
Biden’s reelection campaign has underscored his administration’s position that abortion rights should be restored nationally, and sought to remind voters of former President Trump’s role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Trump won Florida in 2016 and 2020. As has often been the case in Florida, both elections were close, though Trump enjoyed a slightly wider margin in the latter victory.
But several recent controversial policies adopted by Florida’s state government — especially regarding abortion — have led Democrats to believe they might regain support there. Florida will also vote this November on a ballot initiative that would declare abortion a constitutional right.
If the issue does sway or motivate voters, then Trump’s adopted home may become the biggest swing state in the country, with 30 electoral votes in play.
Biden is slated to speak at 3 p.m. EDT, with a second campaign stop also scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
