The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will spend nearly $800,000 taxpayer dollars in an effort to curtail the effects of “structural racism” on chronic kidney disease by applying Critical Race Theory to the field of health.
The whopping sum of $790,955 will be allocated to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, to support the institution’s attempt to “mitigate the effects of structural racism on chronic kidney disease disparities among African Americans.”
The researchers claim that the current treatment regimen for chronic kidney disease (CDK) “fails to attend to the role of structural racism,” citing “racial disparities.”
The grant description goes on to explain that researchers will use “public health critical race practice, a public health framework that addresses change through an anti-racism lens.” Public health critical race praxis, which has been referenced in academic articles, focuses on “race consciousness,” the “primacy of racialization,” “race as a social construct,” and the “ordinariness of racism.”
The push to embed Critical Race Theory into the federal government comes as the Biden administration has institutionalized the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agenda throughout the federal agencies that make up the executive branch.
The HHS-backed study hypothesizes that “comprehensive systems change implemented through an anti-racism lens will improve access to all steps of care along the CKD continuum among African American patients, thereby decreasing existing racial inequities.”
The study states that its long term goal is to “eliminate racial inequities in CKD progression, treatment, and care among patients within Emory Healthcare.” The sum from the HHS comes from two different sub agencies, with $500,000 coming from the National Institute of Nursing Research and $290,955 coming from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease. The grant agreement, which began in September 2023, is set to last until June 2028.
The program official from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the project is listed as Jennifer Michelle Norton, the Program Director at the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Disease.
“I support efforts to implement health equity research, with special emphasis on the role social determinants play in kidney and urologic health; disease; and racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities,” Norton states. “Within the kidney health equity field, my focus is on epidemiology and interventions that occur in community settings.”
A representative of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Health spoke on behalf of Dr. Norton, telling The Daily Wire that the study is part of an effort to address the “social determinants of health.”
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Health goals include “advancing the understanding of biological pathways and environmental contributors to health and disease—as well as pivotal clinical studies and trials that address these pathways for prevention, treatment, and cures in diverse populations,” the spokeswoman said. “One of the ways to achieve these goals is to support research that addresses the social determinants of health and the structural factors that shape their distribution across populations and contribute to disease heterogeneity and health disparities.”
This is not the only time that HHS has allocated taxpayer dollars to ideologically motivated projects that embrace the diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a subagency of HHS, allocated over $1.4 million in taxpayer funds to San Francisco State University to support a study on “anti-racist healing in nature,” The Daily Wire revealed.
“Health disparities are linked to chronic stress and the proposed research will gather knowledge about anti-racist healing in nature as a tool for stress reduction in BIPOC young adults,” the study description read. Study participants had to “identify as a person from the latine/x/o, Black, Pacific Islander, and/or Filipinx community” and were “Free weekend trips and rides to the Redwoods” in addition to receiving $100.
But in addition to pushing DEI and Critical Race Theory, HHS has also promoted radical transgender theory on children. Just under $700k in taxpayer funds was given to an organization by HHS for the purpose of developing transgender-inclusive sex education programs for children as young as 14 years old, The Daily Wire also revealed.
“Youth who are assigned female at birth … are at risk for negative sexual health outcomes yet are effectively excluded from sexual health programs because gender-diverse youth do not experience the cisgender, heteronormative teen sexual education messaging available to them as salient or applicable,” the award description reads.
The NIH also funded a study on the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormone treatment to the tune of $3 million despite transgender children’s hospitals admitting that the practice could result in permanent sterilization.
While the Biden administration has worked to embed far-left beliefs on race and gender into the initiatives of the federal government, policy architects from the former Trump administration have crafted plans to gut the administrative state if Trump is reelected.
Others are preparing to fill in the gap left by outgoing officials, assembling a personnel database of those who might serve in the next administration through the Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project, an initiative from the Heritage Foundation that seeks to “pave the way for an effective conservative Administration.”
