Angel Reese has new Chicago Sky nickname after WNBA draft

Angel Reese has officially replaced the “Bayou Barbie” moniker.

Well, sort of.

The former LSU star and newest member of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky posted on X earlier in the week that she needed a new nickname now that she’s playing in the Windy City and no longer in Baton Rouge.

“I need a new name now that i’m in Chicago lol something cute that is catchy like Bayou Barbie,” she wrote with both crying and eyes emojis on X on Wednesday.

Angel Reese revealed her new nickname.

Well, on Thursday, she revealed that she has her fresh alter ego, though she isn’t fully getting rid of the Bayou name.

“Hey y’all, so it’s the Chi Barbie here,” she said in a TikTok on Thursday. “I want y’all to know like I’m still gonna be the Bayou Barbie but like I’m going to Chicago now. They [are] basically already been inheriting me into Chicago. Like so many people reached out to me — the love from Chicago is running deep and going crazy. So I am the Chi Barbie. I’m the Baltimore Barbie and I am always gonna be the Bayou Barbie.”

Reese’s career with the LSU Tigers came to an end in the Elite Eight of this year’s NCAA Tournament after a loss to Caitlin Clark and Iowa that drew 12.3 million viewers on ESPN.

On Monday, Reese was taken No. 7 overall in the draft by the Sky, and said she’s excited to play for new head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, who played under then-assistant coach Kim Mulkey — now the coach at LSU — in the 1980s at Louisiana Tech.

“My conversations were great with T-Spoon. As you know, she was coached by Coach Mulkey, so I kind of thought maybe I’ll go there,” Reese said Monday night. “Knowing, like, the conversations were so good and she felt like a mother to me. Being able to be a black woman and as a head coach, and everything she’s done at the NBA level, I just knew everything they were bringing to the table.”

The 2023-24 SEC Player of the Year was a force for the Tigers, leading the conference in both scoring (18.6 points per game) and in rebounds (13.4 per game).

Now, she’ll be joining forces with South Carolina national champion Kamilla Cardoso.

Nevertheless, before she gets on the court for her first game — slated for May 15 against Dallas — Reese said she has some personal business to attend to in Chicago.

“So I get to Chicago soon, but I need all the hairstylists, all the nail techs, the lash techs, the waxes, the facials, the aestheticians — I need all of that,” she said in her TikTok.

“So I need all of y’all to comment the best places, the best girlies, anybody that’s doing it, ’cause I need consistency.”
