The A24 tearjerker The Iron Claw has officially set a streaming premiere date.
Starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson, The Iron Claw follows the Von Erichs, a legendary family of doomed wrestlers who suffer a series of tragedies in the ’80s.
The sports drama explores the Von Erich brothers’ unbreakable bond as they struggle with fame, competition, and tragedy.
Decider’s John Serba praised the film in his review, writing, “Absorbing and unsettling, and featuring a career performance from Efron, The Iron Claw is one of the best movies of 2023.”
Holt McCallany also stars as their father Fritz Von Erich, and Maura Tierney plays their mother, Doris Von Erich. Lily James also appears as Kevin’s wife, Pam Adkisson.
When will The Iron Claw stream on Max?
The Iron Claw will be available to stream for free on Max beginning Friday, May 10. It will also make its linear premiere on HBO May 18 at 8pm.
Despite the film’s tense subject matter, the cast still managed to have some fun on set. Stanley Simons admitted that he would pay tribute to Efron’s iconic role on High School Musical by singing “Breaking Free” right before they filmed a serious scene.
Efron noted that it “was pretty funny” and admitted that he “still love[s]” when High School Musical gets brought up.
The Iron Claw is the latest A24 feature to land on Max.
The studio penned a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in December 2023, making more than 100 A24 titles available to stream on HBO, Cinemax and Max.
Other recent films that have received theatrical releases, such as Love Lies Bleeding, Stop Making Sense (2023) and Civil War, will also be added to Max.
