President Joe Biden told the hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe in a Monday phone interview that he will remain in the presidential race, even as members of his own party are calling for him to drop out following his disastrous debate with former president Donald Trump.
Biden’s Morning Joe call isn’t likely to allay Democrats’ concerns. “How, how, can you assure you’re gonna be on, on, you know, [unintelligible] on your way to go to, you know,” he challenged the show’s hosts. “He said I think I encouraged Russia from going—I, I, I, encouraged, I think he encouraged Russia going in. I mean [unintelligible], reading from a list of lies.”
When cohost Mika Brzezinski asked Biden if he had been tested for any age-related illnesses, noting that he was unable to finish sentences at the debate, the president laughed off the notion and said, “Look, um, look, the, the, country, the rest of the world is looking, our allies are looking, for U.S. leadership. … Come with me, watch!”
The call comes after his interview last week with George Stephanopoulos, in which the 81-year-old Biden refused to concede that his mind had deteriorated in any way.
