The NFL, Fox, and CBS have reason to celebrate after the two conference championship games scored massive ratings over the weekend, with more than 50 million viewers each, a first in the last ten years.
The AFC Championship Game on CBS featuring the Kansas City Chiefs’ 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens brought in 55.4 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. CBS’s numbers were the largest ever for an AFC title game. At one point, viewership for the AFC showdown peaked at more than 64 million viewers, making Sunday’s game the most-watched non-Super Bowl program on the network in 30 years.

The NFC Championship over on Fox generated even better numbers with the San Francisco 49ers come-from-behind 34-31 victory against the Detroit Lions, recording 56 million viewers, with the viewership hit nearly 59 million at one point. Fox had its biggest audience for an NFC title game since 2012 with the New York Giants 20-17 win in overtime against San Francisco.
In Detroit, where Lions fans had hoped to see the team advance to its first-ever Super Bowl, the NFC title game had a 46.3 rating and 79 share.

THR noted that the huge ratings score was the first time since 2014 that both conference championship games averaged more than 50 million viewers (out-of-home ratings weren’t part of Nielsen’s same-day reporting until 2020).
The NFL’s viewership was up over the last few years, with the numbers being the best the league has seen since 2015, Deadline noted.
NFL games in 2023 made up 93 out of 100 of the top broadcasts of the year, that’s up from the 82 it had last year, SportsProMedia noted.
