Trump wants ‘enabler’ as VP: Harris

Vice President Harris said former President Trump wants an enabler as vice president after his campaign sent vetting materials to potential running mates.

“What we know is that Donald Trump wants an enabler. He doesn’t want a governing partner. He doesn’t want another Mike Pence, and I think that is clear,” Harris told Politico. “The litmus test is, are they going to be absolutely loyal to Trump over country or their oath of office, or, frankly, the American people?”

Harris referenced former vice president Mike Pence, who was a loyal second-in-command during the administration but broke with Trump when he refused to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He then ran for the GOP nomination against Trump and has criticized his ex-boss on various issues.

Trump sent vetting materials last week to four Republicans who are considered front-runners to join his ticket: North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) and Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

His campaign has reportedly has also asked for information from Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and Ben Carson, his former Heath and Human Services secretary.

The former president has hinted who is on his short list but also has signaled he may wait until the Republican National Convention in mid-July to make an announcement.
