Katy Perry went viral with a jaw-dropping — though non-existent — Met Gala outfit that was created using artificial intelligence that not only fooled fans, but tricked her own mother.
In a Monday post on Instagram, the 39-year-old pop star shared several images that surfaced on X of her dressed in various outfits at this year’s “Garden of Time” themed event held in New York City. It is unclear who created the AI photos.
She captioned the post, “couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.”
In one photo, she’s wearing a giant, floor-length gown covered in flowers and butterflies. In a second, Perry sports a metal corset with an image of a key, complete with a skirt made of florals and vines.
In the third photo, the “Roar” hitmaker shared a screenshot of a text thread she had with her mom Marry Hudson, who was fooled by the images along with Perry’s followers.
“Didn’t know you went to the Met,” Perry’s mom wrote her daughter. “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.”

Perry replied, “Mom, the AI got you too. Beware!”
In the last slide of Perry’s post, there was a video of the singer in a studio recording what could be new music for an upcoming album.
The pictures of the “American Idol” judge surfaced on social media Monday night as fans were following places like X to see which stars had attended this year’s event and what outfits they were wearing.
One of the posts of the AI-generated ballgown photo has 15.4 million views with nearly 70,000 reposts as of Tuesday morning, with a note about how it was made with AI, NPR noted.

A post of the second outfit has 4.6 million views and has since been labeled “digitally created.”
Perry wasn’t the only star who had AI images generated of her. Before the event, photos surfaced of singer Dua Lipa.
In the post, the 28-year-old singer wore an all-corseted, off-the-shoulder gown. At the time of this publication, the post has garnered 2.1 million views.
She later showed up at the NYC gala wearing all black and with crimson hair, NPR noted.
