Sam Smith knows how to make a dramatic entrance.
The “Unholy” hitmaker, who identifies as non-binary and uses “they/them” pronouns, arrived at the Met Gala 2024 red carpet Monday matched with their boyfriend Christian Cowan as they coordinated with black and white suits.
Smith’s look was completed with a black tulle skirt underneath their suit jacket. They paired their look with a light blue tie while Cowan went without the skirt and donned a gold tie. The couple, who also made their red carpet debut at the event, both accessorized with silver and gold roses on their waists.
“Because it’s supposed to be about back in time, we wanted to reference the 1940s, Oscar Wilde — a queer icon,” Cowan told Vogue red carpet co-hosts Ashley Graham and Gwendoline Christie. “We’re both queer and British so an English rose, I thought was perfect.”
“And early on in our days, I gave Sam a metal plated rose,” he continued.
This marks Smith’s debut appearance at Vogue’s annual star-studded soirée.
Smith has been having plenty of fun with fashion over the past year.
At December’s British Fashion Awards, they doubled up on Vivienne Westwood designs, walking the red carpet in a tailored black skirt suit and towering platform boots before changing into a dramatic taffeta gown to accept the Cultural Innovator Award.
Smith also made a supersized style statement in a cartoonishly oversized blue sweatshirt and wide-legged jeans from Vetements at July’s “Barbie” premiere in London.
And at February’s Brit Awards, they turned heads in a polarizing inflatable latex look by Harri that inspired many a meme.
But perhaps nothing can top their arrival at last year’s Grammys; Smith and “Unholy” collaborator Kim Petras walked the carpet alongside “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars Gottmik and Violet Chachki, with the whole group coordinating in hellishly haute red ensembles.
