West Point cadet Havin Morris, 21, dead after apparent drowning during spring break in Florida

A 21-year-old West Point cadet was found dead in a river Monday night after he went missing over the weekend while on spring break in south Florida, according to officials.

The body of Havin Morris was discovered in the New River two days after he vanished while partying with a group of buddies, according to the Sun Sentinel, citing a Fort Lauderdale police report.

The California native likely drowned and no criminality is suspected, authorities said.

“The information gathered throughout our investigation led FLPD’s Dive Team to search the New River near the area where he was last seen,” police told KPIX.

“Divers located his body on Monday night. At this time, his death appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected.”

Morris and his friends were at a bar near the river around 11 p.m. when his pals “lost track of him” a few hours later, according to the police document reported on by the Sentinel.

The friends called him to no avail and couldn’t find him at his hotel, the newspaper reported.

Morris’ father filed a missing person report after he became aware of the situation.

Morris was remembered as a “bright resilient young man with a determination to succeed,” a West Point Maj. Rebecca Gogue said, per the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Cadet Morris was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets, committed to serving his country as an Army Officer,” West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland said in a statement, according to the newspaper. “The entire West Point Community offers our heartfelt condolences to the Morris family.”

Morris graduated from Amador Valley High School in the city of Pleasanton in 2020 before his education with the US Military Academy started, according to his Facebook page.
