Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos rehashed a potty prank he played on his own mother-in-law on this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.
The toilet talk began after Ripa noted that “people bought panic bidets” during the pandemic, prompting her to ask the audience if they were familiar with what a bidet is.
“I know there’s a lot of Americans here in the audience,” she teased.
Ripa explained that they originally installed their own bidet for her mother-in-law — Consuelos’ mother — “who cannot live without a bidet.” However, Ripa’s own mother was not a fan of the accessory.
“And then when my mom was staying with us, she absolutely hated it,” she recalled. “So Mark played a prank on her.”
Consuelos claimed that “she said [the bidet] reminded her of an outhouse,” adding, “And I’m like, this is a fancy toilet!”
Ripa reiterated, “We were like, ‘This is the opposite of an outhouse’… She said it makes noise, it does things.”
So Consuelos hatched an idea.
“I got one of those little motion-activated recorders, so when she would come in and sit down…,” he began.
Ripa chimed in, “… it would talk to her, too!”
Consuelos even gave Live a glimpse at what he had the bidet tell his mother-in-law.
“It said, ‘Hello, Essie!’” he recalled. “‘Thank you for joining us today. Would you be doing number one or number two? Just sit back and we’ll do all the rest.’”
While Consuelos said that they “kind of snuck down there” when he “knew she was going to the bathroom,” Ripa noted that they “followed her down there covertly.”
Consuelos added, “And all you could hear is, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’”
Ripa noted that their mothers are “polar opposites,” telling Live, “What his mom finds to be a necessity, my mom finds to be an absolute nightmare.”
She then recalled the toilet in their “fancy” Las Vegas hotel, which would sense someone had entered the bathroom and would open automatically.
“That would’ve freaked my mom out!” she quipped. “She would’ve died with that!”
