Noteworthy items from the Yankees’ Grapefruit League action on Friday:
Gleyber day
Gleyber Torres’ hot streak at the plate continued with another homer and a double, as the second baseman went 2-for-2 in a 6-2 loss to the Pirates at Steinbrenner Field.
Bad bounce
Luis Torrens, vying for a catching spot in the organization after returning to the franchise that signed him out of Venezuela a dozen years ago, was forced from the game after getting hit in the face with a ball.
He was trying to throw out Jesus Castillo at third, but the throw bounced off Jack Brannigan and bounced back into Torrens’ face.
He said he was OK.
Caught my eye
Nick Burdi has pitched just 19 games in the majors since 2018, but he has been solid so far in Yankees camp and threw another scoreless inning Friday night.
He’s given up just one run in his last four appearances.
Saturday’s schedule
Luis Gil will go up against the Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field at 1:05 p.m., his first start since striking out eight in 3 ¹/₃ innings against the Phillies on Monday.
That game will be followed by a Spring Breakout game, featuring prospects from both the Yankees and Toronto, also at Steinbrenner.
