Russell Wilson may have signed a one-year deal with the Steelers, but he’s planning on making it a long-term commitment.
In a video interview with the Steelers’ team website on Friday, Wilson said he doesn’t view his deal as a one-and-done stop, despite penning a short-term pact.
“I see it as a long-term goal,” Wilson, 35, insisted. “I want to be part of the Pittsburgh community for a really long time and I’m really excited about that.
“And hopefully we can add some championships here.”
Wilson also said during his Friday press conference that he was pursued by several other teams, but ultimately wanted to be in Pittsburgh.
He had previously had an “exploratory” meeting with the Giants before landing in Pittsburgh for his deal.
On Friday, the Steelers also traded quarterback Kenny Pickett, which clears the way for Wilson to become the starter this year.
“I was fortunate to have several teams call, but this was the place I wanted to be,” Wilson said told reporters. “To be a Pittsburgh Steeler, to wear the black and gold, it’s a true honor, it’s tradition, it’s history. There’s six trophies in there. We’re coming to get a seventh.”
The championships portion of his address is consistent with what his messaging has been this offseason.
On a February episode of “I Am Athlete” with former All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Marshall, Wilson said that he’s looking to win multiple Super Bowls on his way out the door.
He notably has one from his days with the Seahawks, leading them to rout over the Broncos in Super Bowl 2014.
In his sitdown with the Steelers’ website, he reiterated the same thing, making clear about what his ultimate goal seems to be in his new home.
“The best part, too, was walking down the hallway. You walk down this hallway and you see six trophies and you see the all-time greats of this game have played here, and it brings chills to you,” he said.
“I’ve been fortunate to win one,” he added, referring to his one Super Bowl ring, “and got a few more to get.”
