A Florida man is accused of intentionally doing multiple burnouts on an LGBTQ pride-painted intersection with his truck earlier this month before he surrendered after a week-long search.
Dylan Brewer, 19, was caught on surveillance video in his lifted pickup truck, with LED underbody lights and a flag attached to the back, revving his engine and making a hard left turn at the intersection of NE 2nd Avenue in Delray Beach on Feb. 4.
As the truck peeled out of the area, two curved tire marks were left behind as the smoke created by the spinning wheels dissipated in the air, according to the video released by the Delray Beach Police.
“Witnesses reported that Brewer was observed intentionally performing multiple burnouts with his vehicle over the LGBTQ pride crosswalk,” the Delray Beach Police Department said in a statement on Monday.
“The reckless action caused significant damage to the streetscape painting, which serves as a symbol of unity and inclusivity for the LGBTQ community.”
Law enforcement investigators received multiple reports for Brewer’s “destructive acts” along with several witnesses providing cell phone video of the burnouts over a week-long investigation.
Brewer turned himself over to police on Feb. 12.
He was charged with felony criminal mischief, damage to property over $1,000 and misdemeanor reckless driving.
He was released on a $5,250 bond just after midnight Tuesday, according to jail records.
The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC) said the vandalism should be considered a hate crime, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The Delray Beach intersection mural was targeted in a similar stunt the day after it was unveiled in June 2021.
Alexander Jerich was part of a birthday “President (Donald) Trump Birthday Rally” when he used his pickup to burn tire marks into the new mural.
He was originally arrested and charged with criminal mischief, reckless driving, and evidence of prejudice, but had the latter charge dropped and recently finished his probation sentence, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
In 2022, a similar rainbow-design crosswalk in Atlanta was twice spray-painted with swastikas.
During the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, a “BLM” mural painted outside of Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan was vandalized several times including by a black woman who lived-streamed herself doing it in July 2020.
