18th century farmhouse dangling over edge of cliff on UK coast

A historic 18-century British farmhouse is precariously hanging over the edge of an eroded coastal cliff, photos show.

The structure at Cliff Farm in Trimingham, Norfolk, England, is dangling from its perch after the ground gave out from underneath it earlier this month. Now the piece of history is set to be demolished, SWNS reported.

The three-bedroom home was purchased at an auction just five years ago for about $165,000. Within that time, a significant amount of land has been swept away by the elements leaving the farmhouse in danger of crumbling into the beach below, according to the outlet.

The homeowner has been evacuated since the North Norfolk District Council announced its intent to demolish the property before it falls.

“It’s very sad that the old farmhouse has been undermined by landfall over the last few weeks,” Harry Blathwayt, North Norfolk District Council’s portfolio holder for the coast, said. “Sadly, it will have to be demolished.”

“”The owner of the property has spoken to council officers, and he fully accepts that the building is in a precarious position, to say the least,” he added.

Heavy rainfall over the winter that saturated the steep cliffs accelerated the erosion and caused several landslides, SWNS reported.

In January 2020, a landslide sent soil and debris down to the beach from a trailer park in Trimingham  The seaside resort town of Hemsby has also seen several homes destroyed due to coastal erosion.

One former soldier in the area,  Lance Martin, made headlines after he twice physically moved his bungalow farther away from the shore, according to SWNS. The 66-year-old announced plans to airlift the home via helicopter to a safer location.
